Peter/Robert Comments removed. Before posting ask yourself: will my comment convince anyone of the case for Scottish Independence? Swearing at our political opponents just won't.

And they say Scotland is a left leaning progressive country. That was always a myth. This one doesn’t want to pay inheritance tax or pay his workers a decent wage. If we were independent we would have a populist right wing Government within ten years. They just wouldn’t be called the Tory Party,

The term "left" has lost all modern meaning, we need to stop posturing behind it and state our views up front.

I'm for whatever improves the lot of working people, and that includes employment opportunities. Employer national insurance is a tax on employment. Companies are being incentivised to move work offshore where employment costs are less. I think an independent Scotland would take a more enlightened approach to taxation, one that encouraged companies to train and develop local talent.

So we’re not going to be Scandinavia after all. More like a low tax, small state Singapore. You have a lot in common with the Brexiteers. Left is only irrelevant to people who want to “move on”.

It's the tax rake, not the rate, than makes the difference. Growing GDP per head is the key...something the UK has failed to do for the last 20 years: Scotland must do better.

The zoomers are out in force today, using their Natsi language of quislings and traitors against their fellow Scots, who happen to disagree with them. The last Labour Government took millions of pensioners and children out of poverty by the end of their period in office and massively helped families through working and child tax credits. In the meantime the Nats in Scotland have failed poorer children in education, forced young Scots out of the Universities to make way for those who have to pay, ruined the health service and can’t even build ferries to fit a harbour 😆 Thank God they’ll never succeed and these bitter, bigoted people will never get the chance to completely bankrupt us financially and morally.

The last Labour Government did progress on poverty. What impresses you about the Starmer government?

I’m not afraid to say I am disappointed on some fronts. The winter fuel payment was badly handled and too many pensioners on modest incomes have suffered. I am also concerned about the proposed welfare cuts although I recognise spending has escalated since covid. I would like to see extreme wealth taxed in preference to income bearing all of the burden and large multi billion corporations paying their fair share. However, there are four years to go and I would like to think things will improve once they get a grip on the economy. I believe an independent Scotland would take a long time to get its finances into balance and most of all I don’t believe the exceptionalism myth (see Lesley Riddoch etc) that we are more progressive than England. We are socially conservative and have nothing approaching the diversity of England. You only have to look at some mainland European countries attitudes to see how inclusive England actually is. I lived there for six years andexperienced nothing but a welcoming attitude.

Reeves should have just means tested the WFP but wanted to look tough on her first day in the job. The fairest way to cut welfare payments is to open up opportunities in Scotland's abandoned communities: abandoned by both London AND Edinburgh governments.

Ever expanding welfare is just lazy government avoiding transformational change...the kind of change that independence could bring.

I'm not sold on new wealth taxes, when more could be made of existing wealth taxes. Much easier to tax property and excess expenditure (e.g large cars) than drive people out the country when a notional wealth limit is reached.

I'm with you on England, there is no difference in core values north and south of the border..that's a fake divide.

Nice to have a civil debate in the end. Calling fellow Scots traitors and quislings is extremely offensive and self defeating. Have a good day.
