What you have said here needs to be shared as widely as possible. I hope the Scottish Government pays attention and draws some moral courage from it because it is also at risk from the fundamental political upheaval and world events which are moving faster and faster. Westminster is chaotic, weak, at the mercy of corporate crooks and frightened of its own electorate. It is capable, as we know, of doing some very bad things to Scotland.

Ooh, big, bad Westminster again. Yawn. The policy of the Nats is to leave us with no nuclear capability, but you think it’s Westminster that’s weak? I’m sure if Swinney asserts himself, Trump will be shaking in his shoes.

If Scotland asserts herself we can make a positive difference by having our own foreign policies. We can also get rid of your ridiculous

" nuclear capability" which presents its main "capabilities" - accidental disasters -including chronic radioactive pollution -just outside our biggest city. Mutually Assured Destruction continues courtesy of your nuclear lobby - civil and military. Try visiting Caithness.

Positive difference? What will that entail that will have the slightest impact on global conflicts? Student politics. I don’t think that Jim will agree with you, given he wants a “massive” rearmament push. The threat of nuclear war had prevented war for 80 years. In fact I haven’t a clue what you’re agreeing with unless it’s the ability to spout hate speech with no repercussions. Grow up.

There are a group of left wing people who are pretty much indistinguishable from the populist right in certain matters. Galloway, Embery and Jim come to mind. One is the lazy use of woke as an insult. Its correct meaning is just plain, old good manners. When people complain that “you can’t say anything these days”, I often wonder what they want to say. Do they still want the “freedom” to call black people the n word or to call gay people poofs and dykes? Someone dislikes all Muslims because of a general attitude to women? Back in the day, Jim wrote some bigoted nonsense about gay people when backing up the prejudice of the Brian Souters of this world and made life that bit more difficult for people I knew. Words have consequences. Sometimes you’re just too old to move with the times. It happens with every generation.

Is "I don't like Muslims" really an opinion, or more and admission of your prejudice? You don't say what that person's position would have been at the university, but if it had anything to do with providing instruction for other students - you can see the dilemma they had in terms of finding a home for someone who chose to transmit their prejudice to the world through social media. Your other examples of "woke" equally lack detail and there is no clear connection between this and the unreadiness of Europeans to give the US a robust response to their brazenness (indeed - a primary criticism against "the woke" is that they are too quick to find fault with white power holders like Trump and Vance).

The point of whataboutery totally misses the point. It's not that Vance isn't making a valid point because of his hypocrisy. Instead, what the hypocrisy reveals is that he is not interested in raising a valid concern but rather to launch an attack that will give a green light to like-minded people in Europe to weaken their own countries in the interest of strengthening his own little junta. In short, there was no message worthy of any intellectual rigour, and silence, disdain and (for those who care) regret at the collapse of an alliance are exactly the right reactions.

Well said. Read Jim’s section on climate change in his book. Apparently he knows better than 99% of scientists, with one of the most naive theories you’re ever likely to read. Says it with his usual confidence, to be fair.
